April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, so today we want to take a moment to remind you of a few things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones against this disease.

Get a Dental Checkup

When you come in for a dental visit, you receive a thorough examination by our dental professionals. We know when something looks unusual, and we can let you know if you should have something checked out by your doctor.

Conduct a Self-Exam

In between dental visits, you can conduct self-exams at home. Take a look at your mouth and watch for signs such as:

  • Lumps and bumps inside your mouth and on your lips
  • White, red, or speckled patches of tissue
  • A chronic sore throat
  • Difficulty moving your jaw or tongue
  • Feeling like you have something caught in your throat

Don’t Use Tobacco

Tobacco products have been linked to numerous cancers, including oral cancers. Quitting or avoiding tobacco can significantly reduce your risk of developing this condition.
