Gum disease can be treated in a variety of ways, but the most conservative method is with a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing. This is where your hygienist or dentist removes infection caused by bacteria below and around the gumline and then smooths out the tooth roots so bacteria doesn’t return. Advanced gum disease may require other procedures to rebuild recessed tissue, like grafting, to prevent tooth and bone loss.
Although it may sound painful, a topical anesthetic can be applied to your gums before scaling and root planing to make your deep cleaning more comfortable. Even more extensive gum therapy is virtually painless thanks to local anesthesia and different levels of sedation that will completely relax you.
