We have a board-certified periodontist on staff, a dentist who specializes in treating gum-related problems. You can feel good about coming to see us if you have gum disease or some other issue with your gums.

If we find evidence of gum disease, then we will most likely recommend a therapeutic service known as scaling and root planing (also called “deep cleaning”). Your dentist will:

  • Offer you sedation if you’re nervous about your procedure
  • Use a special instrument called a scaler to gently remove built-up plaque, tartar, and bacteria around and below the gumline
  • Plane (smooth) your teeth roots so that bacteria have a harder time re-collecting there
  • If possible, perform laser treatment instead to safely remove damaged gum tissue without any cutting or stitches

If significant gum disease has caused your gums to recede, we can also perform gum recession treatment. This could be in the form of a gum graft or using the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (done at our Calallen location). These treatments can restore your lost gum tissue and give you back a beautiful gumline.

Don’t let gum disease ruin your smile. Call Sabal Dental today at 361-529-9245 to find out if you need gum disease treatment in Alameda Corpus Christi.

Common Questions About Gum Disease Treatment

Is gum disease treatment painful?

Our dental team will do all we can to ensure that your gum disease treatment is as comfortable as possible for you. We use a liquid local anesthetic called Oraqix that allows us to numb the area we’re working on without any needles. Our patients appreciate this gentle approach. Plus, we offer inhaled sedation in the form of laughing gas that will calm any anxious nerves you have.

What causes gum disease?

When food particles get trapped between your teeth, the bacteria in your mouth feed on them, creating a sticky substance called plaque. Over time, plaque becomes hardened tartar and can eventually lead to gum inflammation and pockets of infection below the gumline. At this point, gum disease treatment is needed to rid your gums of bacteria, tartar, and plaque.

How long does gum disease treatment take?

Most of the time, your gum disease treatment will take about an hour. Your dentist or periodontist will first numb your gums using a needle-free liquid anesthetic, then they will use special instruments (possibly a laser) to clean around and below your gumline to remove built-up tartar and bacteria. Next, we’ll smooth your tooth roots to make it more difficult for your gums to become reinfected.
